Over the past year, the Chinese player has delivered standout performances. En route to reaching the semifinals of Beijing (ATP 500), he defeated Rublev (#8) and Musetti (#17), to cap off an outstanding tournament. Bu’s powerful baseline game and strong mental fortitude have made him a formidable competitor, and his steady climb positions him as one of the most promising young talents on the ATP Tour.
13 - Alex Michelsen: 97 - 41
In number 13 we have the 20yr old rising star Alex Michelsen. His ascent from No. 97 to No. 41 at such a young age is nothing short of a breakthrough year. The American’s most notable performances have been the R32 of the Australian Open (Grandslam), R32 of Cincinnati (ATP 1000), as well as QF in Tokyo and Washington (ATP 500). He has been able to compete on all surfaces, a testament to his versatility, while his aggressive baseline game and strong mental resilience have been central to his success. Michelsen’s steady climb up the rankings reflects his immense potential and positions him as one of the most exciting emerging talents on the ATP Tour.
12 - Mariano Navone: 125 - 48
Argentina’s Mariano Navone comes in at 12, climbing from No. 125 to No. 48. The highlight has been his rapid development and growing confidence. Over the past year, the Argentine has impressed, with his most notable performance being reaching the finals of Rio de Janeiro (ATP 500). His key victories over higher-ranked opponents on clay court have showcased his potential to be a force on that surface, and at 23, there is still plenty of time for him to improve his allround game.
11 - Jordan Thompson: 55 - 26
Jordan Thompson seems to be reaching a new level at the age of 30, going from No. 55 to No. 26, underscored by his coolness in close matches throughout the year. The Australian has made small improvements that have led to significant strides, highlighted by reaching the R16 of the US Open (Grandslam) and Cincinnati (ATP 1000), QF of Washington (ATP 500) and Paris (ATP 1000), and the SF of Queens Club (ATP 500). With his all-court game and mental toughness, he has proven himself a formidable contender, steadily climbing the ranks and establishing himself as one of the most reliable players on the ATP Tour.
10 - Luciano Darderi: 128 - 44
Number 10 is Italy’s Luciano Darderi. Going from No. 128 to No. 44, the 22yr old Italian has made an impressive growth across all surfaces. In the past year, the Italian enjoyed breakthrough performances, including deep runs reaching the R64 (Grandslam) at Wimbledon and Roland Garros (Grandslam), R32 in Rome (ATP 1000) and Cincinnati (ATP 1000), and the QF of Hamburg (ATP 500). His consistency in top-tier events, coupled with key victories, has solidified his reputation as one of the most promising young talents.
9 - Alejandro Tabilo: 85 - 22
The Chilean Alejandro Tabilo slots in at number 9 after an impressive season where he went from No. 85 to No. 22. Over the past year, the 27yr old made a series of bold runs, highlighted by reaching the R32 of Wimbledon (Grandslam), the SF of Rome (ATP 1000) defeating Djokovic (#6) and then Khachanov (#19), and participating in the Laver Cup as a member of Team World. 8 - Juncheng Shang: 183 - 51
To conclude part 1 of this list, we have the prodigy from China, Juncheng Shang. Shang’s meteoric ascent from No. 183 to No. 51 is a testament to his relentless determination and exceptional talent. At just 19 yrs old, the prodigy has consistently exceeded expectations this year. His highest notes of the 2024 season have been reaching the R32 at the US and Australian Open (Grandslams), and claiming wins against Bublik and Musetti enroute to winning Chengdu (ATP 250) . His improved discipline, work ethic, and mental fortitude at such a young age has propelled him into the top 50 of men’s tennis, cementing him as one of the most exciting young talents in the sport today.
