Table toppers Falkirk host bottom side Airdrie in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. The sides are familiar with each other having played in Airdrie less than 3 weeks ago, where Falkirk ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in a midweek match. Airdrie's goalkeeper Wright had a couple of clangers which cost him his place in the starting XI, but this hasn't stopped Airdrie conceding 4 times in the two games since. Last time out, Falkirk put Queen's Park to the sword in a dominant 4-0 win at Hampden, ultimately costing Spiders manager Davidson his job. Airdrie hosted second place Livingston and played out a pulsating 3-3 draw, with the bottom side twice taking the lead before salvaging a draw with a late equaliser.
Airdrie are now one of the form sides in the division after their injury and squad issues cleared up, and since the turn of the year have been going hammer and tongs to win every match. They have managed to get within striking distance of Dunfermline and Hamilton after looking doomed to relegation, but know they need to take as many wins as possible if they want to retain their Scottish Championship status. Falkirk have managed to build an 8 point lead at the top of the table now, but won't take their foot off the accelerator as their dominant style of play has worked so well over the last season and a half.
Looking at Falkirk's last 8 league matches, they have scored a huge 2.5 goals per game from 2.02 xG on average. They have scored in each of these 8 matches, and hit at least 2 in 6 of these 8 games. They have kept 4 clean sheets over this spell, but in their other four have conceded 2 goals. They have conceded at a rate of 1 goal per game from 0.97 xG conceded. Airdrie will set up to outscore Falkirk, knowing that sitting back to protect a 0-0 is mission impossible.
Airdrie's last 8 have been similarly high scoring. With just one clean sheet in their last 8 against a Raith side who had little intention of attacking, they have conceded 1.88 goals per game from an xG concession of 1.59. They have scored in every game except their match against Falkirk, logging an average of 1.5 goals per game from 1.48 xG. While they didn't score against Falkirk in the reverse, they produced 1.32 xG, which is the second-highest amount of xG Falkirk have conceded over their last 8 matches.
Dominant defender Luke Graham will be missing for Falkirk due to international duty, with rotation winger Miller Thomson also away with Scotland's youth setup. With an important game against second placed Livingston following on Tuesday, there is the chance for some rotation from Falkirk, but three points and a dominant performance over the bottom side in the table will be the weekend's priority for Falkirk.
Looking at the Over 3.5 goal metric across the whole season, Falkirk sit in second place over the whole league with 9 of their 29 games seeing 4 or more goals. Airdrie are in third place on this metric, with 8 of their 29 landing.
