Rangers head to third-force Hibs in Barry Ferguson's final game in charge of the Glasgow side. The caretaker manager recorded his first two wins in 90 minutes at Ibrox within the last week, as old rivals Aberdeen were put to the sword in a 4-0 second-half thumping before Dundee United squandered a 1-0 lead on Wednesday evening in a 3-1 defeat. Hibs sealed their place in 3rd and the riches of European football in a 2-2 draw at St Mirren, with their rivals for third place both losing to the Old Firm sides.
Outside of matches immediately before and after European duties, Barry Ferguson has insisted on playing full strength sides in league fixtures as he looks to improve his win rate at his boyhood club. Despite extending Rangers' home loss record multiple times, Ferguson has earned plaudits for going unbeaten against rivals Celtic, winning at Celtic Park for the first time in 5 years, and getting the better of Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce side over two legs. Rangers were unlucky against Bilbao in the following tie, having survived 70 minutes with 10 men in the first leg and having a blatant penalty (to take the lead) turned down in Spain. After the emotions from the European run had expired, Rangers have looked much more assured in strong wins over Aberdeen and Dundee United.
Rangers' last 8 league games have seen them claim away wins over Dundee (4-3) and Celtic (3-2) alongside the wins over Aberdeen (4-0) and Dundee United (3-1). They managed draws against Celtic at home (1-1), St Mirren away (2-2) and Aberdeen away (2-2), with Saturday's rivals Hibs the only team to claim victory over The Gers in a 2-0 smash-and-grab at Ibrox. Over this spell, Rangers have scored 2.38 goals per game from 1.66 xG on avg. They've conceded 1.63 goals from 1.44 xG, and their 4-0 win over Aberdeen was their only domestic clean sheet under Ferguson.
Hibs have been in imperious form under club legend David Gray, and the board's patience with the manager has been richly rewarded. Despite this same set of players being rooted to the bottom of the table in late November, Hibs have managed to secure 3rd place with a game to spare. This means that they are guaranteed group stage European football so long as Aberdeen don't somehow get the better of Celtic in the Scottish Cup final. Given Aberdeen have triumphed just once in their last 40 games against Celtic going back to 2016, Hibs will be planning and budgeting for a lucrative season in either the Europa or Conference League groups. The Hibs side will be in celebratory mood and neither side will have much reason to stick to defending.
Hibs have opened up a lot in their recent matches as they chase the points to guarantee their 3rd place finish, and only one of their last 5 matches has seen fewer than 4 goals. With much of their form since their turnaround being built on a strong defence, Hibs have now conceded 7 in their last 4 as they prioritise wins. Over their last 8 league games, they've averaged 2 goals per game from 1.43 xG, conceding an average of 1 per game from 0.91 xG.
With the pressure now off for both sides, we anticipate an end-to-end game similar to the 3-3 draw at Easter Road back in January. Hamza Igamane helped himself to a hat-trick in this game, while Hibs expertly battled back and displayed the resilience they've come to be associated with. Dundee United's soft goal on Wednesday from a set-piece dispelled any notion that Rangers' defensive woes are behind them following their clean sheet against Aberdeen.
