Wycombe are in exceptional form and will look to capitalise on Bolton's defensive injury crisis in this pivotal League One clash at Adams Park. The Chairboys have been a scoring machine this season, boasting the league’s most potent attack with 43 goals in 19 matches, nine more than any other team. Wycombe have scored two or more goals in 15 of those games, showcasing their consistency in breaking down defences.
Bolton, on the other hand, are struggling defensively. Their backline has been decimated, with starting centre backs Ricardo Santos and George Johnston suspended due to yellow card accumulations, while Forino and Toal remain sidelined through injury. This forces manager Ian Evatt to rely on Forrester (just one league start this season) and Dacres-Cogley, a natural wing-back, in an unfamiliar back-three system. The last time this makeshift defence was deployed, Bolton suffered a 2-1 loss to League Two Walsall in the FA Cup. Adding to their woes, Osei Tutu, who filled in at right wing-back last game, is also out with a knee injury.
Bolton’s issues aren’t limited to defence. Arfield is still unavailable, and Josh Sheehan remains doubtful for midfield after picking up an injury two games ago. The absence of key players at both ends of the pitch leaves Bolton vulnerable, especially against a Wycombe side that hasn’t lost in their last 17 league games, amassing 13 wins and four draws.
Bolton’s recent away record is concerning against stronger opposition. While they’ve managed wins against bottom-half sides, they’ve lost their only two away games against top-half teams, with heavy defeats to Stockport (5-0) and Birmingham (2-0), both to nil, also lost away to Charlton to nil to fuel the fans concerns that they can't compete on the road versus top sides. Bolton have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine games, with just one clean sheet in eight away matches this season.
In contrast, Wycombe are thriving at home and have the added incentive of finishing as league leaders on Christmas Day with a win in their last game at home before the new year. Their momentum, combined with Bolton’s injury crisis and poor away form against top opposition, makes Wycombe good value on the -0.25 line at 1.88.
