The New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons are set to face off in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series tonight at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The series is tied 1–1, with both teams showcasing their strengths in the opening games. The Knicks secured a 123–112 victory in Game 1, while the Pistons responded with a 100–94 win in Game 2, ending a 17-year playoff victory drought.
In Game 1, the Knicks overcame an eight-point deficit entering the fourth quarter by unleashing a 21–0 run, ultimately outscoring the Pistons 40–21 in the final period. Jalen Brunson led the charge with 34 points, while OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns each contributed 23 points. However, the Pistons bounced back in Game 2, with Cade Cunningham delivering a standout performance of 33 points and 12 rebounds. The Pistons dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Knicks 48–34, and held New York to just 18 points in both the first and third quarters.
Analyzing the teams' performances, the Pistons' defensive adjustments in Game 2 were pivotal. They limited the Knicks' scoring opportunities and capitalized on their own offensive rebounds to create second-chance points. To regain control of the series, New York will need to improve their ball movement and involve other key players like Towns and Anunoby more effectively.
There is reason to believe that the Knicks are capable of making the necessary adjustments heading into Game 3, they are a solid rebounding unit and have shown throughout the season that they can defend without fouling as they are one of the more disciplined teams in the league. We expect them to increase their defensive intensity behind the coaching of Thibodeau who is known for his ability to create great defensive schemes.
That being said, our projections make the Knicks 2.5 point favourites in this encounter and we see value in backing the away team to bounce back tonight.
