Viktoria Plzen host Jablonec on Sunday afternoon after a very contrasted start to their season last week. Plzen headed to relegation favourites Pardubice last Friday evening, and managed to find the back of the net after just 3 minutes on their way to a 5-1 romp of the home side. However, this positivity was quickly eroded as Swiss side Servette executed an excellent smash and grab on Tuesday in their Champions League qualifier. Despite complete domination of the match, Plzen were unable to get on the scoresheet and went down 1-0 from an excellent counter-attack from Servette. This means that they now face the tricky prospect of heading to Geneva needing to win in 90 minutes to preserve their Champions League campaign.
This is of course music to the ears of the Jablonec staff, who are looking to build on a creditable 1-1 draw against Prague giants Sparta in their first match. Jablonec scored early against Sparta and managed to hold the favourites off until big striker Kuchta nodded in an equaliser on the hour mark. They limited Sparta to very few chances, and will looking for a similar defensive performance against a Plzen side with enforced changes.
Given the riches on offer to teams in the Champions League in the new format, it is understandably the priority competition for all sides outside of the big leagues. Plzen will remain confident of getting the better of Servette, but stand their best chance by allowing the likes of Sulc, Dweh and Vydra to get some rest in their legs. Jablonec managed a 0-0 draw with Plzen at this stage of the season last year, taking advantage of Plzen's upcoming European qualifier to kill the game dead and afford very few chances.
