This is a huge test for Joshua Van, but one that stylistically suits him well. Royval thrives in chaos — an unpredictable, high-paced fighter who brings volume, tricky angles, spinning elbows, and an aggressive grappling game off his back. He overwhelms opponents not through precision but through pace and awkward timing. However, he’s also notoriously hittable, often leaving his chin exposed during wild exchanges and having to rely on durability that’s starting to crack.
Van, in contrast, is calculated and technical — a pressure boxer with elite vision in the pocket, excellent body work, and tight, accurate combinations. He carries real power for 125, has shown consistent cardio, and continues to improve fight to fight. His jab and body shots should be money against Royval, whose loose jab and volume-first approach will leave openings throughout. Van also has excellent takedown defence, which will be crucial here, as Royval doesn't have the offensive wrestling to bring the fight to the mat consistently.
While Royval has faced tougher competition and has a wealth of experience, he’s 33 at flyweight — not ideal — and is coming off serious health concerns, including repeated concussions and troubling post-concussion symptoms. That’s especially alarming given his reliance on durability and the way he fights.
Van is the younger, sharper, and more defensively responsible fighter. He’s also a fighter who builds into bouts, making his pressure increasingly overwhelming as the rounds progress. Royval will make this a war, but Van has all the tools to outland, outwork, and possibly hurt him down the stretch. This feels like a “passing of the torch” moment — a rising contender facing a declining veteran, and Van has the skillset and mindset to seize the opportunity.
