The second Scottish Cup Semi-Final takes place on Sunday afternoon as champions-elect Celtic face relegation favourites St Johnstone at Hampden Park. Given Celtic's stranglehold over domestic trophies in Scotland in recent years, they are very familiar with big days at the national stadium. St Johnstone are a surprise opponent given they are adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, but a favourable draw that has seen them play just one top flight opponent means the Perth Saints are enjoying a trip to Hampden as they look to cause an upset against Celtic. St Johnstone have very recent experience in doing just that, as Celtic left McDiarmid Park with a 1-0 loss just 2 weeks ago.
Given the small league sizes in Scotland, it is common for sides to play each other within a few weeks of a reverse fixture. In the four games this season in which Celtic have unexpectedly dropped points against Aberdeen (2-2), Dundee (3-3), Dundee United (0-0), and Hibs (2-1), Celtic exacted revenge in the following fixture by winning by at least 2 goals. In these four follow-up revenge matches, Celtic bagged an average of 4 goals and conceded exactly 0. They thrashed Dundee and Aberdeen 6-0 in the following games, and eased to 2-0 victories over Dundee United and Hibs immediately after dropping points to them. In these revenge games, Celtic have averaged 2.21 xG and conceded just 0.43 on average.
Celtic are comfortable at Hampden Park too, and have visited the national stadium very regularly. In their last 8 cup competition visits to Hampden, they have emerged victorious on every single occasion, but needed extra time on two occasions. Across these 8 games, they have averaged 2.63 goals while conceding just 1.13. Four of these games have been against Rangers, which highlights just how impressive these stats are. Their average xG in these games has been 1.68, while they have conceded 1.19 on average.
Over the last 11 league games, Celtic have averaged 3.27 goals per game, conceding 1.27 on average. They've only conceded an average of 0.72 xG, with only Rangers, St Mirren and Hearts managing above 1 expected goal. Celtic have created an average of 2.37 xG, with 1.64 expected goals their lowest tally in a single 90 minutes. St Johnstone have only scored 0.82 goals per game across their last 11, and their 1-0 win over Celtic had their only goal in the last 3 matches. Their xG has been similar at 0.85 per game, while they have conceded 1.27 goals per game from 1.45 xG.
Celtic have relatively few injury concerns other than veteran goalkeeper Schmeichel and should have a comfortable day securing a spot in the final with Aberdeen. St Johnstone got a miraculous win over Celtic in the league two weeks ago but lost by at least two goals in each of the previous four meetings. Key CB Mikulic and key wide man Drey Wright are out for St Johnstone, as are McClelland and Ikpeazu in the long-term.
