Nottingham Forest vs Brentford: Premier League Preview
Nottingham Forest and Brentford meet in a rearranged Premier League fixture at the City Ground on Thursday, with both sides seeking a vital three points to keep their respective European ambitions alive as the season enters its final stretch.

Forest head into this contest off the back of a spirited but ultimately fruitless FA Cup semi-final appearance against Manchester City, where an early setback and three strikes of the woodwork summed up their misfortune in a 2-0 defeat. That exit now allows Nuno Espírito Santo’s men to fully focus on the Premier League, where they sit sixth, just two points off third and with a game in hand over many of their closest rivals.
Their most recent league outing saw Forest produce one of their most disciplined performances under Nuno, securing a 2-1 win at Tottenham despite being vastly outplayed on the stats sheet. It was a hallmark display of resilience, but back-to-back home defeats would be a first for them this season if they fall to Brentford, following a last-gasp loss to Everton in their previous outing at the City Ground.
The reverse fixture in west London ended in a 2-0 win for Forest — their first-ever Premier League victory over Brentford and the first away side to win at the Gtech this season. That result also snapped a six-game winless run in this head-to-head (D3, L3). On home soil, though, Forest have been less dominant, winning just two of their last five meetings with the Bees in Nottingham.
Brentford’s campaign has been one of two halves. After struggling for form, particularly on the road in the early stages, Thomas Frank’s side have recently turned a corner. The Bees are now unbeaten in their last three league matches, including a 4-2 win over Brighton last weekend that ended a nine-game winless home streak and reignited their push for a top-half finish — and possibly more, if other results fall in their favour.
Having failed to win any of their first nine away games this season (D2, L7), Brentford’s recent revival on their travels has been stark, with five wins in their last seven away league matches (D1, L1). However, their only two away setbacks in that span came against teams currently above Forest in the standings — a potential concern given the Tricky Trees’ lofty position.
Team News
Forest welcome back Neco Williams and Ryan Yates from suspension, with teenager Zach Abbott expected to drop to the bench. Anthony Elanga, who was surprisingly benched at Wembley, is in line to return to the starting XI. Full-back Ola Aina is Forest’s only significant absentee but could return before the season ends.
Brentford continue to monitor several injuries. Igor Thiago and Aaron Hickey are closing in on returns, though Fabio Carvalho, Josh Dasilva, and Yunus Emre Konak (injured late against Brighton) remain unavailable. Rico Henry made a return as a substitute last weekend but may not start, with Keane Lewis-Potter likely to continue as an improvised left-back.
Key Stats & Players to Watch
- Chris Wood is chasing history, aiming to become just the second Forest player to score 20 Premier League goals in a season after Stan Collymore (22 in 1994/95).
- Christian Nørgaard has not lost any of the six Premier League games in which he has scored this season (W5, D1), including one in last season’s corresponding fixture.
- Forest are unbeaten in four of their last five games against Brentford at the City Ground (W2, D2, L1).
- Brentford have the fewest yellow cards in the league this season (48), highlighting their disciplined style under Frank.
With European spots up for grabs and both sides playing catch-up on the fixture list, Thursday’s clash promises to be a crucial and potentially defining night in the race for continental football.
