Hamilton Accies host Ayr United in a mismatch in form in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. Hamilton are in freefall, having lost 3-0 at home to Raith midweek amid a chorus of boos from the home support. Having lost two goals in the first 10 minutes, the atmosphere turned incredibly sour and the players were unable to produce anything going forward. Ayr arrive in impeccable form, having dropped just two points over their last five matches.
Hamilton are in seriously worrying form and have just conceded their 40th goal of the season after just 21 matches. Only Airdrieonians have conceded more and both teams below Hamilton (Dunfermline and Airdrieonians) have seen an uptick in form and performances in recent weeks. Over the last five, Hamilton are conceding at a rate of 2.20 goals per game from an average xG concession of 1.71. They have failed to score in three of these matches and will be dreading the division's form side arriving on Saturday.
Ayr United have conceded just one goal in their last five games, scoring 8 goals in the process as they have taken 13 points from a possible 15. Having conquered Livi away and Partick Thistle at home, they are rising to the challenge of defeating the teams competing with them for promotion places. Their average xG concession across these matches has been 1.18, so they are doing an excellent job of conceding almost an entire goal less than their xG per match.
Ayr have added more firepower in the form of Curtis Main on loan from the Premiership and had the benefit of a free midweek to prepare for this match. With a poor atmosphere at Hamilton amidst discussion of financial problems and their troublesome form, it is difficult to see the Accies being able to get a result against high-flying Ayr.
