Hibs host Motherwell on Saturday afternoon as they look to continue their quick ascent up the table. After occupying the relegation zone for much of the season, the Hibs' board's patience with club legend David Gray has paid off with a run of one defeat (away at Celtic) in nine matches. Motherwell successfully killed their midweek game at Killie to take a satisfactory 0-0 draw back to North Lanarkshire.
Hibs hosted Rangers last weekend and looked rattled after 20 minutes as the Gers sailed into a 2-0 lead. Manager David Gray showed his tactical credentials by tweaking his system mid-way through the first half and managed to pressure Rangers into a 3-3 draw. They were the more dangerous team after Gray's changes, and were it not for the individual brilliance of Igamane's perfect hat-trick, they could well have taken all three points against Rangers. The Hibees will be pleased their unbeaten run has continued and will be eyeing this match as an excellent opportunity to get back to winning ways.
Motherwell had a tough trip to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night to contend with, playing out a 0-0 draw on the plastic pitch in freezing conditions in Ayrshire. They were lucky to escape with a point seeing as they allowed 18 shots, 1.26 xG to their own 0.32 and produced just 2 shots on target. Kilmarnock hit the bar and had a very close offside decision to disallow a goal. Lennon Miller continues to be a big miss, and the injury picked up by striker Stamatelopoulos is a further hit to their attacking threat.
While Motherwell did a good job to keep the midweek tie at 0-0, Hibs have been much more potent in attack than Well's midweek opponents. Hibs rank behind only the Old Firm on big chance creation, xG creation and shots on target. Motherwell have conceded the 4th most xG in the league and they have the most saves per match on league duty, indicating they allow their opponents much higher shots on target than the average. Their 0-0 draw on Wednesday was only their third clean sheet of the league season.
Hibs went to Motherwell in late November and claimed a 3-0 win, which really signalled the start of their good run of current form. Hibs produced 2.72 xG from open play in this match, carving through Motherwell with ease. While Motherwell claimed victory at the start of the season at Hibs, the Edinburgh side are transformed and playing with much more confidence now.
On the injury front, Motherwell's tricky season continues. Key player Miller remains out, along with STs Stamatelopoulos and Robinson. Strong CB Gordon is a major doubt after coming off at Killie, while Paton, Callachan and Seddon remain out. Hibs are missing captain Joe Newell to injury but have great depth in CM with Triantis, Kwon, Moriah-Welsh and Campbell all excelling in recent weeks. Youan and O'Hora look set to return to action, while Boyle and Gayle are in blistering form up front.
Given Hib's strength in midfield and their ability to cut through an injury ravaged Motherwell side, we anticipate a tough away day for Motherwell in what is their 10th match in 35 days.
